One of the greatest benefits of video in the classroom is that it can do so much more than simply test a student’s comprehension of curriculum. It can also encourage their creativity, self-expression and bolster presentation skills. Plus, Flip is free, easy to use and works across smartphones, tablets and web, making it easy for instructors to set up time-based, moderated assessments and share links with students.
Here are some ways you can use Flip for oral assessments in your classroom today!
Remote oral assessments: With Flip, instructors can conduct oral exams remotely, allowing students to take their exams from anywhere with an internet connection. This can be particularly useful in a higher education setting where students may not be able to physically attend an exam due to geographic location or scheduling conflicts.
Active learning: By using Flip for oral assessments, educators can encourage active learning and engage students in a more meaningful and interactive way. Students can listen to their own recordings, re-record, and edit their recordings as well as reflect on the content and quality of their video exam, leading to a deeper understanding of the subject material.
Multi-lingual exams: Flip provides a localized version in Spanish as well as English and can also be localized using browser translation tools into many other languages. Many educators, like our friend May Versoza, also find Flip to be a helpful tool to build students’ confidence as they practice mastery of a foreign language.

Portfolio building: Flip provides students with the opportunity to create a video portfolio of their oral exam performances. This can serve as a valuable resource to demonstrate their mastery of the subject material and for older students, can be used in future job applications.
But of course, as with almost any platform, there can be some concerns with how students may cheat during exams.
Here are some steps that educators can take to minimize the risk of cheating using Flip:
Clearly communicate expectations: Clearly communicate to students the expectations for the oral exam, including what types of assistance are allowed and what types of behavior are considered cheating.
Monitor content: Educators will review the content of the videos submitted by students to ensure that it is their own work and not copied from other sources.
Secure Platforms: Flip offers the option of password-protected Groups or request to join groups only, which can help to ensure that only registered students have access to the exam questions.
Use original content: Educators can create their own exam questions, diagrams, and files for students to use in the video presentation. This helps to ensure that students explain or present specific content in their videos, demonstrating comprehension through discussion.
Provide clear instructions: Providing clear instructions on how to use Flip for the oral exam can help to minimize the risk of cheating by ensuring that students understand the guidelines and expectations for the exam.
So let’s get started! Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Sign up for a free Flip account by visiting Flip.com or downloading from the app store on i and creating a free account.
- Create a group and add a topic. Your Topic can be “Mid Term Oral Exam” and your description can contain the oral video exam questions. You can add media to your Topic as well for your students to present as part of the exam (ex: slides, graphics or other images).
- Set up exam settings. In the “Settings” tab, set the length of the video and a due date for completion. The moderation setting allows only the teacher to see each student’s video submission providing privacy for students. You can also adjust likes, downloads, and responses for videos as well as camera functionality.
- Share the exam. Share the exam with your students by providing them with the unique URL or by embedding Flip links in your learning management system.
- Monitor student responses. You will receive notifications when students have submitted exams either on their phones or in the activity feed.
- Evaluate the results. After all students have submitted their videos, evaluate their performance and provide feedback as needed. You can provide feedback for your student via text or a video response. Only you and your student will be able to see this information.
